Notes
The Taking was featured in Random House’s Library Bulletin which was included in the February 15, 2004 issue of Library Journal. More details can be found in the ephemera appendix.
The first printing of The Face in paperback includes 14 unnumbered pages containing the cover and the first chapter of The Taking.
The Literary Guild’s May 2004 mailing featured the following on the back flap of the envelope: “Pre-order the newest blow-you-away thrillers from Dean Koontz and Lisa Scottoline.” Enclosed was a flyer featuring The Taking including the cover on one side and a full description of the book and a photo of Dean on the other.
The Literary Guild’s June 2004 mailing features The Taking on the font of the envelope and on the “Literary Guild Insider” newsletter cover. The book was also given a two page spread on page two and three.
Originally the Charnel House lettered edition was described to be “Hand bound in full Morocco leather with a preserved short-stemmed rose encased within the front board.” However, during production this was changed and the book was released as described above. The colophon in the book lists the original description while an enclosed letter provided the revised description.
The “sand-writing” on the front cover of the Charnel House lettered edition is the text written into beach sand by the main character Molly on page 336 (trade hardcover edition).
