CineVue reviews Odd Thomas
February 8, 2014
Sommers wastes no time in hurling the viewer straight into the alternate universe of his protagonist. The exhilarating actions are accompanied by an extensive narrative delivered by Yelchin’s husky and confident tones. For those unfamiliar with the Koontz’s source material, the narrative provides additional information that at times feels like explanatory-overload but with a plot this complicated, narrative is a definite requirement. Sommers, who adapted the screenplay himself, is clearly passionate about his subject and packs a great deal in to the 90-minute runtime. His directorial flair is as energetic as the script – picture Back to the Future’s Hill Valley Town Square laden with Mummy-esque special effects.

After almost 2 centuries, the Frankenstein monster 1s still going strong in popular culture
January 26, 2014
The Frankenstein monster first lumbered into existence in 1818 in Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus,” a work that many have called the first science-fiction story.
…-Frankenstein in print
Mary Shelley, who was only 18 when she began writing Frankenstein, surely had no idea her creepy creation would inspire countless other novels, including “The Frankenstein Wheel” (1972) by Paul W. Fairman, “Frankenstein Lives Again” (1981) by Donald F. Glut, “I Am Frankenstein” (1996) by Dean C. Anderson, “Monster: A Novel of Frankenstein” (2012) by Dave Zeltserman and the five-volume series collectively known as “Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein.”
For those who like pictures with their words, Frankenstein comic books have existed since 1940 with the publication of Prize Comics No. 7, which featured the “New Adventures of Frankenstein.” More attainable comics include Marvel’s The Monster of Frankenstein (1973), DC’s Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. (2011) and Image’s Frankenstein Mobster (2003), which features a conflicted creature stitched together from the body parts of one cop and three bad guys.

Beauty and a new Beast
January 26, 2014
An Irish review of Innocence featuring an image from Demon Seed:
Koontz’s latest novel, Innocence, is an intriguing and compelling take on the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. Raised in total isolation in the countryside, Addison Goodheart is a young man unlike other young men. As he says of himself, “when they saw me men and women alike recoiled, but their fear quickly gave way to fury” and, always, they immediately tried to kill him.

The Singular John D. MacDonald
January 18, 2014
For those of you looking forward to reading Dean’s new introductions to the novels of John D. MacDonald, I’ve got good news and bad news.
The bad news: Dean’s only written a single introduction titled “The Singular John D. MacDonald” and it’s being printed in all of the different non-Travis McGee novels that Ransom House is re-issuing. In other words, Dean has written an essay about the author, not an essay about each book.
The good news: You need only purchase one book if your intention was just to read Dean’s intro. (Though I’d suggest reading your way through Mr. MacDonald novels anyway.)
Harlan Ellison's Watching
