If there’s no other proof as to me being a completist, it’s the fact that I spent money on an ebook “unmasking Dean Koontz´ [sic] prophecy.” Please spare yourself from this drivel.

Plenty of new items this week ranging from 1969 to 2022. And, in site news, Appendix G was getting too large for WordPress to handle properly, so I’ve split it into two: G(1), which covers 1969-1999, and G(2), which covers 2000-present. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it was the best one I could come up with.
- Afterword to The Key to Midnight POD Trade Paperback
- The Eyes of Darkness POD Trade Paperback
- Frankenstein screenplay lettered edition photo here and here
- The House at the End of the World mentioned in the April 2022 issue of Locus
- Gothic Blimp Works as in the February 14, 1969 issue of The East Village Other to Appendix G(1)
- The Key to Midnight POD Trade Paperback
- Changed The Servants of Twilight “bootlegs” to POD
- Changed The Voice of the Night “bootleg” to POD
Bootlegs or Just Poorly Done Amazon Print-on-demand?
May 1, 2022

The following titles have had some interesting reprints lately:
When the first two of them were released I that these were bootleg editions that someone who wasn’t authorized to sell these editions for the following reasons:
- There is no cover price listed on the books.
- The copyright pages are woefully incomplete.
- They contain no statement of printing.
- There is a print-on-demand barcode on the last page.
- The publisher is listed as “Independently Published”.
- The Also By Dean Koontz page on The Voice of the Night lists “The Darkest Evening of the Yea”, a pretty significant typo.
But as more of them have been released, I’m starting to reconsider the bootleg status of these editions for these reasons:
- Now that there are four, you’d think someone would have noticed by now and put a stop to it.
- The cover art on The Voice of the Night and The Eyes of Darkness both match the cover art for obviously legitimately released audiobook editions (Eyes forthcoming) from Brilliance Audio. I can’t imagine someone also bootlegging the art without someone noticing.
So, that’s where I stand on this issue right now. I’ll post updates if/when more information becomes available and/or additional evidence becomes available.

This week’s biggest news is that I’m starting to dive back into fanzine content again. As I’ve explained before, this stuff is complicated due to many factors, mostly due to the cross-references between issues regarding letters, responses, and the responses to responses. This week I started focusing on SF Opinion, the fanzine that Dean published in the late 60s. For now, there are just placeholder pages. Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be filling in the issues and adding the individual content entries. I’d love to get one done per week, but no promises. (If you’re a Vaughn Bodē fan, you’re gonna want to check these out.)

Dean and the Weather

Best-Selling Author, Weather Enthusiasts Explain Allure of California Weather
In the city of Los Angeles, every time the heavens open up, the hashtag #LArain trends on Twitter. People say rain, and the weather in general, is different in California. Anyone who has lived in the Desert Southwest long enough is fascinated by the rare appearance of rain and the wonder of a storm.
Every wind gust and raindrop is big news in L.A. In Arizona, the monsoon comes and goes every year like clockwork. But what precisely is different about rain in the desert? To find out, we asked a bestselling author, a storm chaser and TV meteorologists who have known both coasts.
From his home in Southern California, Dean Koontz, the bestselling author whose latest novel Quicksilver was published in January, has written dozens of books in which the weather adds to the suspense. According to Google Books Ngram Viewer, he mentions weather terms a total of 168 times in his book Midnight, 165 times in The Taking and 158 times in the aptly titled Lightning.
Koontz spent roughly half his life on the East Coast before he moved to California and that has given him an appreciation for the unique weather in the state. Why does weather feature prominently in his novels? Koontz told AccuWeather via email he uses the frequently changing Southern California weather as a template to set the scene.
“Here in Southern California, I can be basking in a light 80-degree off-shore breeze and, within two hours be in the snow country in Big Bear, be on the seashore in the morning and in Death Valley in the afternoon,” Koontz said. “The extremes fascinate me and make for good dramatic effects in fiction.”
