You’re going to have to dig deep to figure out the Koontz connection on this one… Or just wait until Monday’s site update.

All the print collections are now done. Though as previously mentioned, I need to list these on the individual title pages. One other note, I don’t own copies of the two 2004 UK omnibus editions listed below. If you have copies, I’d love to hear from you.
- Dean Koontz; Three Complete Novels (1993)
- Dean Koontz: Three Complete Novels (1994)
- Dean Koontz: Three Complete Novels (1996)

No confirmation yet on whether the blurb will appear on/in the book at this time. (Though I assume it will.)

As mentioned last week, these omnibus editions are a bear to work with. Several more have been entered with all the relevant cross-references. But then I realized that I need to list the omnibus editions on the individual title pages. (For example, Dean Koontz: 3 Complete Novels needs to be an entry on the Intensity page.) At this point the plan is to get through creating pages for all the omnibus editions then circle back and get them listed on the individual title pages.
But also this week a package arrived with some fanzines. I’ll get to the ‘zines that have “contributions” from Dean eventually, but this week’s arrivals all things like reviews and mentions of Dean so I got those listed in the appropriate places on the site. Be sure to check them out.
- Dean Koontz: 3 Complete Novels
- Dean R. Koontz: A New Collection
- Dean R. Koontz: Three Complete Novels
- Dean R. Koontz: Thee Novels in One Volume
- Fear That Man review in Sandworm #10
- Review of “A Mouse in the Walls of the Global Village” in The Alien Critic #5
- Review of / editorial on The Pig Society in Sandworm #11
- Sandworm #14 to Ephemera

Tomes & Tones: Squarepusher Paired with Dean Koontz
January 19, 2019

Welcome to Tomes & Tones, a brand new feature which explores the often uncanny pairing between books and music. Have you ever read a novel, and had a particular soundtrack in the background? And is this novel now synonymous with that music, whenever you think back to it?
For each episode, one writer will give an example of when they have experienced this pairing, and why these seemingly unrelated components worked so well together. Hopefully it will offer up some creative combinations to our readers, who can judge for themselves how the works of art are able to merge. No doubt many readers will also have some unique and interesting combos of their own.
In our first episode, I will recap on my partly unintentional but ultimately divine pairing of Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz and the industrial/electronic band Squarepusher‘s record Hello Everything. Enjoy!
Writing is an important part of my life. In fact, my lifelong dream is to publish novels. I do believe the year was 2006 when this ambition was solidified with more resolve than ever before. There was one particular book which skyrocketed my creative synapses, and whenever I think back to my initial experience with that novel, a specific soundtrack plays in my head.
We all have life-changing moments with music, novels and visual entertainment… This was mine; It resounds to this day. And I’ve read a lot. So I guess this piece is also my platform to praise and defend the works of Dean Koontz. Okay, so he is not an underrated author. He essentially lives the dream that vanity-struck aspiring authors salivate over. Every year a new Koontz novel arrives for retail, available in all outlets reputable or otherwise, and with his name embossed and shiny on the front cover. And this gives the impression that his books are nothing more than cosmopolitan pulp. If I’m discussing literature with a supernatural twist, why am I not instead covering the works of China Miéville or Haruki Murakami, to name but two?
I believe Dean Koontz is a little misrepresented in this respect. It’s true that, in the words of Primus, ‘They Can’t all be Zingers’. But Koontz is also a writer with a lot of conviction. And his pacing and mastery of suspense in writing is often remarkably adept. Look no further than his 2003 novel Odd Thomas for a prime example of this.
2006 was the year when this book set my imagination on fire.

What edition of Midnight is this?
January 18, 2019
While entering the record for Dean R. Koontz: Thee Novels in One Volume (below left) I came across someone selling that book but the listing had a completely different cover. (Below right)

All of other showings of this cover I can find online insist this is a cover for the omnibus edition (not true as I have a copy of that in my collection) or for an edition of Midnight with an ISBN of 0517079127 which also leads me down some dead ends. I’ve contacted the ABE seller for additional details but I’m hoping someone here has one and can provide me with some clarification. Thanks!

I spent most of this past week at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as part of my day job. It’s fun. It’s exhausting. But I still managed to get a few of the Omnibus editions added to the site today.

I dug into the audiobook collections this week and got those finished off along with some odds and ends. As I’ve probably mentioned before, the cross references are what will kill me. (Hence the avoidance of the Odd Thomas and Frankenstein books for as long as possible.)

Third pre-signed edition of The Forbidden Door found
December 28, 2018

It’s December 26th and I find myself in a local Barnes & Noble wondering what they’ve got on post-Christmas sale. I see that they have one pre-signed copy of The Forbidden Door left on a display (sadly not on sale) and, for reasons I can’t quite figure out, I decide to check the ISBN against my collection and oddly enough it doesn’t match. So of course, I immediately purchase it and bring it home with me.
Now the research begins.
It turns out that Barnes & Noble offered two versions of the pre-signed book. The first was the one for sale online on the original release date of September 11, 2018 (ISBN 978-1-984-1767-9). The second, and this one I’d just picked up, was part of their Black Friday Weekend Special (ISBN 978-1-984-1769-3) available only in stores starting on November 23, 2018 (and then online for in-store pickup on November 24, 2018.)
It pays to notice the little things. Or be a bit obsessive. I’ll let you decide.
Check out the full edition details here.

Again, other life things are taking precedence over this project hence the small number of updates this week. That being said, I do accomplish at least one thing per day, nearly every day. In many cases that may not reflect in updates listed here. Sometimes it’s just logging and filing articles. Other times it’s researching a thread I left hanging. But I’ve committed myself to at least posting an update update like this every week so here it is.

What’s missing from Stalkers?
December 6, 2018
I was looking at my Dark Harvest ARC of Stalkers the other day and noticed that one entry on the copyright page is crossed out. So the question is, what story by what author was going to be included but ended up not, and why? If you have any information on this please let me know in the comments.

12/8/2018:
Turns out I made an assumption and, aia Facebook, Yankton D. Robins didn’t. I assumed that since it was cut from the ARC of the original publisher’s version, it also didn’t show up in subsequent publications. This is incorrect. The Malzberg story was, for some reason, cut from the Dark Harvest edition, but did appear in the later ROC publication. Why it was cut was still unknown, but this seems to be the general answer to my question. Thanks Yankton!
Koontz Quilt
December 5, 2018
I’m sharing this as both a cool thing and a warning. There is a well-known scam site in the quilting world that uses photos of other people’s quilts, claims they’re selling them, and then never deliver. Recently, this one was used in one of their ads.

While it is amazing, please do not try to purchase it. You will most likely lose your money.
As to whomever originally made this quilt, I have been unsuccessful tracing that down. If this is your work, please let me know and I’ll happily give you credit and extend my appreciation.
Amazing ad for The Face of Fear TV movie

There was that time a TV network adapted a Dean Koontz novel about a lady cop (Pam Dawber) and her psychic mountaineer husband (!) being stalked by a crazed killer in an abandoned high rise.
